Degas is best known for the ballet dancers and beautiful race/polo horses. The thing they have in common is grace and motion. Told the class they get to "step into his painting." I used the ballet steps idea below. (THEY REALLY LIKE IT) Then passed out paper. Told them to lightly divide in 4th's (see above). I talked about 2 dimensional drawing briefly (one dimensional is a stick figure). Passed around ballet clothing to see what tulle feels like and how it makes ballet dancers costumes hang and add movement. Had students come to the front of the room and hold or dress up in ballet type clothing (fairy wings too). Gave a few mintues to do their best 2 dimensional sketch. (Hurry - this takes quite a bit of time!) Then had fill in with pastels...showing them that the closest colors on the rainbow blend best, opposite colors on rainbow make things stand out. While they were coloring I told facts about Degas life and about the painting. Lightly erase the dividing lines and draw in something like a tree -or like the painting, a mirror. See how the picture begins to come alive! Since the dancers were on a break I gave what every dancer needs on a break - a drink! (small size sierra mist - they enjoyed it.)

This handout says:

Teach the first basic 5 steps of Ballet. I copied and handed out with a piece of chocolate. Both boys and girls LOVED doing this. Mention that football players take ballet for the development of muscles used for quick turns and movements!

My lesson Plan for “I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold”

1) I played pin the fireman hat on the dog. I had a party poster from my son’s birthday party.

2) I wrote on the back of each hat facts about the painting or the artist.

3) I had one hat for each kid in the class (and a few extra just in case).

4) Each kid came up and got a turn.

5) I would read and explain the fact on each hat.

6) After that, I had a kids fireman book that the teacher read while I went to go see if Gilbert Fire Dept. had arrived with a fire truck.

7) The fire dept. taught the kids a few safety tips (i.e. wear helmet, stop/drop/roll)

8) Then each kid got to walk through the fire truck

9) It was really fun!

We kept it brief because we were short on time:
1) Had kids write REMBRANDT on the top of blank page. Tell about him.
2) Draw a windmill (Holland)..people from Holland are called Dutchmen.

3)Use the Yarn to show the size of painting (the yarn got in knots -so undo beforehand!)

4)Search & Find: Items in basket -child who picks gets to find in painting (a little boring so keep it moving!)

5)Create Rembrandt self portraits on the paper. (have a few children walk around the room showing others)
-even famous people like Apostle Paul
-light/dark (show quick examples)
-paintings were done like we do Christmas card pictures
-people liked how he portrayed them, realistic, but different...he became rich and famous
-Tell about Dr. picture/dead body (boys love grossness)
-being rich and famous didn't stop him from being sad. His wife died. But he still liked to paint Goodness, beauty.
-An original Rembrandt was stolen recently from a museum. It was worth millions of dollars. Art detectives are still trying to find it.

Activty: had have half the class act like going to recess. Turn lights off. Freeze. Two students with flashlights shine on the Going to Recess "painting". Show movement, light and dark.

Treats: Trader Joes, AJ's, Import stores and sometimes Walgreens carries school boy wafer cookies that have a chocolate top with school boy in dress from Rembrant's times (even if its not these cookies work GREAT as "Rembrandts self portrait" Inexpensive and a hit with the kids!)

If extra time or while passing out the cookie, ask something the learned about the artist or painting.

From Catalonia, Spain. Began studing art at age 14 at School of art in Barcelona Spain. At age 18 began to work alone. Went to Paris. Influenced by Picasso. By 1925 became a memer of Surrealist group. He worked on sets for romeo & Juliet productions, designs, tapestries, rugs, made ceramics & sculptures in stone and wood. Uses brilliant color, curvilinear shapes...

Miro worked continuously. In 1968 alone, he produced 60 paintings, 28 graphic prints and 30 pieces of sculpture - mainly cast in bronze. We are accustomed to seeing artworks with titles but Miro didn't like putting titles to his creations. To get around this problem, he often wrote lines of poetry in place of titles to help views get a feeling for what the artwork was about. On the other hand he gave names to sets of artworks that were done about the same time, such as "constellations.

Henry O. Tanner - The Banjo Lesson

All the words in bold have magnetic word strips in the packet. As the word is mentioned the word strip goes up on the board. Mix the words up as you go, after read the questions and let the child pick the correct word strip off the board.

Tanner was born in 1859 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Was given the middle name for Osawatomie, the Kansas town where his Dad led his first slave revolt. His Dad was a highly respected Methodist Bishop of the African Methodist Church. His Mom, Sarah, was born a slave. One of 11 children. Her mother sent her and her brothers and sisters to the North during the middle of the night so that they could be free, never to see them again. The children were divided among various families once they got there. Sarah became well educated. In 1857, she met Benjamin Tanner. They were married the next year. The next year after that, Henry was born.

In 1866, when Tanner was seven years old he moved to Philadelphia. His home became a center of intelligence and learning for black Philadelphia. His father preached a gospel of daily devotions and social activism.

When he was 12 years old he was in Fairmont Park on an outing with his Dad. He saw an artist painting a big tree on a hill and watched for quite a while and decided he could do that! The very next day he started painting with an old house painters brush and the cardboard from the back of an old geography book.

His earliest paintings were of landscapes, seascapes, and animals at the Philadelphia Zoo. (Show paintings)

When he was 21 years old he entered the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He was very good. Some students were so jealous by Tanner's work that they were mean to him. Once they tied Tanner to his canvas while they were painting outside and left him in the street. Tanner left the academy when he was 22. He spent the next seven years trying to become a successful painter, but failed. In 1888, he moved to Atlanta and opened a photography studio. When the studio failed, family friends helped him get a job as an Art Teacher at Clark University. He later headed the art department. Tanner was known as a superb teacher, but he wanted to paint. He sold most of his old paintings for $300.00 each.

Tanner felt he was treated unfairly in America, so he jumped aboard a steamboat and headed to Europe in 1891. He stopped in Paris, France and stayed until his death. He was 31 years old. He studied at the Academy Julian. He became very successful, well known, and loved. He was one of the first African American Artists to live in Paris. He found no prejudice in Paris, do you know what this means?

In 1893, just two years later since moving to Paris, Tanner painted The Banjo Lesson. This was one of the best work's from this period of time. Tanner shows sympathetic treatment of life amoung the Southern balcks during the late 1800s.

Some of the other first successful paintings Tanner had were the Young Sabot Maker, and Daniel in the Lion's Den (show paintings)

In 1897, a wealthy Philadelphia man financed the first of Tanner's trips to the Holy Land (Egypt and Palestine), this is where Tanner felt his calling was. He painted many

Tanner was a perfectionist and he finished only 3-4 paintings a year, working slowly and carefully. By the time he died in 1937 at the age of seventy-seven, he'd been made Chevalier of the Legion of Honor and his paintings were hung in major French and American museums.

Henry Ossawa Tanner was the first successful religious painter in America. He was also one of the most important Black American Artists that ever lived.

Used the magnetic word strips in the packet to describe the artist.

Made paper plate banjos (sample in the packet) I did a lot of pre-work.

Need: paper plates, artist board, rubber bands and paper clips, and a stapler.

Each child got a pre-made banjo of two paper plates and an artist board neck. The bottom of the banjo needs to be open so don't staple all the way around. The children decorated their banjos being careful not to smalsh in the center. Then they put the rupper bands on the paper clips and made their strings - 3 strings per banjo.

Listened to the "Dueling Banjo" cassette while we made our banjos.

Everyone had to tell me one thing about the artist to get an Oh Henry candy bar.

"The Afficionado"
Look at this months painting. It is of a collage of a bull-fight fan sitting at a table. Strings and pegs of a guitar are on one side, bottle, corkscrew and carafe on the other. There are also clues to the identity of the painting by the words on the painting. "Nimes" is a locale in Southern France, the site of a bull fighting arena. "Le Torero" was the name of a bull-fighting publication. Picasso once said, "I paint forms as I think them, not as I see them." The original position of some ojects represent slight realistic details such as the mustache, the mouth, the bow-tie and stiff front of a dress shirt. In the far left bottom cornere you can see a woman's torso dressed in evening clothes. This type of painting was later to be developed into true collage.

Took the word strips form the packet and handed one to each child, had them read it then told what it meant . This actually didn't keep their attention very well, if I did it again I would have done the same descriptions using a grab bag or playing pictionary.

     What else do you notice in the room?

Played musical chairs while playing the banjo music...loved this.

I borrowed a pair of overalls to dress up for the part...

Talk about Henry and put the accompanying word strip up (strips are in the packet) on the board. Then ask questions to see if they remembered and took the word strips off as I asked and if they got it right.

Rent a banjo from Arizona Musictime @ 480 892-6902. Let them know will in advance when you want to rent them. Let them know it is for Art Masterpiece. I borrowed a banjo book and learned to play "Skip to My Lou". I let them touch it to get a feel of the banjo.

Played the dueling banjos cassette (there is a cassette and a flash drive in the packet). The kids started clapping the rhythm on their own. The children loved it as it got faster and faster.

Gave them a crossword puzzle.

Treat: banjos made out of mint patties and pixie sticks.

Berthe Morisot showed great talent for painting as a young girl. Even though it was unusual for women to become professional artists in the 1800's, Morisot's parents encouraged her to study art and become a professional. She became on of the original members of the Impressionists, a group of French painters who changed the nature of art in the late years of the 1800's. In those days art students visited museums and painted copies of great masterpieces for practice. One day, while Morisot was working this way at the Louvre (a famous museum in Paris), morisot met the artist Edouard Manet. They became friends, and manet invited Morisot to work at his studio. There she met other artist including Manet's younger brother Eugene, whom she married several years later. Women were rarely taken seriously in the art world 100 years ago, but Morisot was always admired, often selling more paintings than Monet or Renoir. Morisot created pictures with thick brush strokes, heavy globs, and bright colors.
Young artst work with thick paints, such as acrylic paints straight from the tube, or textured paints mixed from everyday tempra paints.

-Divide into groups of 5 or 6. Group Puzzle.
Briefly ask questions about the completed puzzle: What is unique? What do you notice? Notice Little streaks of light color make wheat stalks. (Use questions from Art Masterpiece Suggestions in own folder)

- Spread some wheat kernels on the ground have children try picking them up. How hard is it? Do the gleaners have to work hard??

-TREAT: Homemade bread with butter. (or can buy fresh from Val Vista Bread/Alpine Bread Co.)

-While eating do pictionary: the everyday work that your mom or dad does. 1st person to guess it right gets to go next. (P.S. The kids LOVED this! But sometimes requires some assistance with an idea how to draw the occupation or help prompting guesses from the class)

-compare the final pictionary picture with "The Gleaners"....this takes time and work!

I threw items into a pillowcase and the kids took turns pulling something out. I then explained what it had to do with the artist.

example:
*chopsticks - matisse loved Japanese art. You can see an Asian influence in his art.

*glue- when he got older he would cut shapes, place on paper, and have an assistant glue them down "collages"
*see other ideas below.

I showed his picture and the photo of the church he designed. I hung up several of his prints on the board.

They loved this - Then we made our own Masterpieces with cut out shapes. They showed them to the class. We all made comments. We talked about the Purple Robe & asked lots of questions.

TREAT: we ate skittles and M&M's while doing our art project. Lasted 45 min.

HENRI MATISSE - FRENCH

- Has been call the greatest painter of the 20th century. Let's look at some of his paintings (look at calendar)

-Before we look at some of his paintings let's think about something, What makes someone a good artist?

-best known for his use of color. He loved music, was a fine violinist. In his work he tried to capture "musical movement of beauty" with lines, form, colors, and space.

- He was admired for "a rhythmic line."
-After years and years of hard work & experience in painting, Henri Matisse decided to make his artwork using paper cutouts (look at wheelchair picture)

-He said he would:
* study something or hold in his hand
* pictue "purified image" in his mind
* sometimes practice drawing it in the air
* let scissors "carve" throught the color, never clip, to "liberate" the image from the paper
* "scissors can acquire more feeling for a line than pencil or charcoal."
* "cutting straight into color reminds him of the direct carving of a sculpture"
* then pin shapes to his walls and arrange -sometimes a year -look at pictures -
* move around until reaching "musical movement of the whole combination"
* sometimes used smaller cutouts like building blocks forming something larger, ground, sky, etc.

-You are going to get to liberate your own images from color, and create "musical movement" through "decorative oraganization"
- If you want put name of your work on the back and we'll see if we can guess.
