Rembrandt

We kept it brief because we were short on time:
1) Had kids write REMBRANDT on the top of blank page. Tell about him.
2) Draw a windmill (Holland)..people from Holland are called Dutchmen.

3)Use the Yarn to show the size of painting (the yarn got in knots -so undo beforehand!)

4)Search & Find: Items in basket -child who picks gets to find in painting (a little boring so keep it moving!)

5)Create Rembrandt self portraits on the paper. (have a few children walk around the room showing others)
-even famous people like Apostle Paul
-light/dark (show quick examples)
-paintings were done like we do Christmas card pictures
-people liked how he portrayed them, realistic, but different...he became rich and famous
-Tell about Dr. picture/dead body (boys love grossness)
-being rich and famous didn't stop him from being sad. His wife died. But he still liked to paint Goodness, beauty.
-An original Rembrandt was stolen recently from a museum. It was worth millions of dollars. Art detectives are still trying to find it.

Activty: had have half the class act like going to recess. Turn lights off. Freeze. Two students with flashlights shine on the Going to Recess "painting". Show movement, light and dark.

Treats: Trader Joes, AJ's, Import stores and sometimes Walgreens carries school boy wafer cookies that have a chocolate top with  school boy in dress from Rembrant's times (even if its not  these cookies work GREAT as "Rembrandts self portrait" Inexpensive and a hit with the kids!)

If extra time or while passing out the cookie, ask something the learned about the artist or painting.
