Chagall

I And The Village

5th Grade Lesson Plan


Have large picture of I and the Village cut up like jigsaw, each has a number on back and topic.  Kids put puzzle together.

  1. Born July 7, 1887:  Born in Vitebsk, Russia  How many years ago was that?  Father Zahar...Herring factory, What is herring?  Fish  Mother Feigaita...sold herring, flour, sugar and spices out of their home.  Show self portrait.
  2. Oldest Child:  Marc was the oldest child in his family.  He had 7 younger sister and 1 brother. He went to Jewish Elem. School in Heder.  He then went on to St. Petersburg, after that he went to Paris to study art.
  3. Joyous:  Marc Chagall was a very joyous man.  What is joyous?  Happy.  He had a lively imagination and his paintings were dreamlike.  He painted wild and fanciful visions.
  4. Animals:  Marc loved animals.  In this painting it shows his cow.  The person is offering the cow a gift. (nosegay)  He said, "The cow in our yard with her milk as white as now, the cow who used to talk to us."  They had a special bond with animals.
  5. Memories:  When he moved to Paris he began to paint memories of his childhood.  He once said, "I don't analyze objects, I  analyze memories."
  6. Color:  Most of the artists in Russia painted in very somber colors.  What does somber mean?  When he went to Paris to study he began to paint I bright cheerful colors.  Show "Magician"  green faces, trance and hallucination--dreamy.
  7. Multi-Media:  What does multi-media mean?  Chagall also created pottery, designed costumes and scenery and painted murals for the theater and ballet.  He also did stained glass for a synagogue in Jerusalem.  Show stained windows.
  8. WW II:  During WW II Marc Chagall fled to America.  He was a Jew and feared for his life.  This is when he painted scenery and designed costumes for the ballet and theater.
  9. Died 1984:  How old was he when he died?  97 years old
  10. I and the Village:  Notice the pattern of circles and triangles.  The sun and the moon repeating diagonally.  The beads on the cows neck and the smile on the persons face suggest happiness. Notice the priest in the doorway of the church and the vision of the milkmaid in the mind of the cow.  How big was this painting?  75 1/4 x 59 1/4

Serve chocolate milk (cow) and cookies (flour, spices that mother sold)
