Miro



2nd Grade Lesson Plan

Joan Miro (1893-1983)
Miro's name is pronounced hoan mro

 Concentration Game (Packet)

SPAIN:  Miro was born in Montroig, Spain which is near Barcelona, in 1893.  How many years ago was that?  He started Art School when he was 14 years old.  His teachers felt he was gifted and encouraged him to use his imagination and draw freely.  he was 25 when he had his first one man exhibit with over 60 paintings and many drawings.  It was a huge success.  When he was 26 he moved to Paris.  In Pris, he studied the art of Picasso, Van Gogh and Matisse.  He returned to Spain when he was 46 years old.  Miro died in 1983.  How many years ago was that.  (Show pics of Miro when young #3, page 4, painting with his finger #4, page 36 and when he was older #5, page 23).

DREAMS:  Miro joined a group of Surrealist painters.  Do you remember what Surrealist means?  It is art based on dreams or fantasy.  Miro denied being  painter of the unreal.  Painting #6, page 99, Harlequin's Carnival #7, page 73.

PEOPLE AND DOG IN THE SUN:  This painting is done in Primary colors.  Does anyone know what that means (red, yellow and blue)  Miro used a thick black line for an outline.  Can you see why he named this painting PEOPLE AND DOG IN THE SUN?  What would you have named it?  It is said that Miro overlapped a person with the dog.  Can you see this?  Let's look at this up-side down.  Do you see the other person now?  Show Art Masterpiece Painting

CLOUDS:  Do you ever imagine figures in clouds?  That is how Miro saw every day items, that is how he painted.  #8, Page 121.

MUFFINS AND JAM:  One day eating breakfast muffins and jam, a blob of jam spilled Miro was fascinated with the shape of the jam that he drew a painting from the jam.

BRIGHT COLORS:  Bright, brilliant, carefully put together shapes.  #9, Page 113

ART PROJECT:  Hand out different colors of shapes to glue on a paper.  Have the children use a black crayon to tie the objects together.

Treat:  Serve muffins with jam
