- Played the opening song of Fiddler on the Roof to help the class experience Russia, the culture and importance of tradition.
- Cut out of paper the exact size of the painting. Class amazed how big it was.
- Played Concentration Game

Have large picture of I and the Village cut up like jigsaw, each has a number on back and topic. Kids put puzzle together.
- Born July 7, 1887: Born in Vitebsk, Russia How many years ago was that? Father Zahar...Herring factory, What is herring? Fish Mother Feigaita...sold herring, flour, sugar and spices out of their home. Show self portrait.
- Oldest Child: Marc was the oldest child in his family. He had 7 younger sister and 1 brother. He went to Jewish Elem. School in Heder. He then went on to St. Petersburg, after that he went to Paris to study art.
- Joyous: Marc Chagall was a very joyous man. What is joyous? Happy. He had a lively imagination and his paintings were dreamlike. He painted wild and fanciful visions.
- Animals: Marc loved animals. In this painting it shows his cow. The person is offering the cow a gift. (nosegay) He said, "The cow in our yard with her milk as white as now, the cow who used to talk to us." They had a special bond with animals.
- Memories: When he moved to Paris he began to paint memories of his childhood. He once said, "I don't analyze objects, I analyze memories."
- Color: Most of the artists in Russia painted in very somber colors. What does somber mean? When he went to Paris to study he began to paint I bright cheerful colors. Show "Magician" green faces, trance and hallucination--dreamy.
- Multi-Media: What does multi-media mean? Chagall also created pottery, designed costumes and scenery and painted murals for the theater and ballet. He also did stained glass for a synagogue in Jerusalem. Show stained windows.
- WW II: During WW II Marc Chagall fled to America. He was a Jew and feared for his life. This is when he painted scenery and designed costumes for the ballet and theater.
- Died 1984: How old was he when he died? 97 years old
- I and the Village: Notice the pattern of circles and triangles. The sun and the moon repeating diagonally. The beads on the cows neck and the smile on the persons face suggest happiness. Notice the priest in the doorway of the church and the vision of the milkmaid in the mind of the cow. How big was this painting? 75 1/4 x 59 1/4
Serve chocolate milk (cow) and cookies (flour, spices that mother sold)

Stained Glass: Chagall created pottery, designed scenery, costumes, did stained glass for a synagogue.

Need: tray, toy fish, toy cow, diary, Fiddler on the Roof Video, 2 Matzo Cracker, Stained Glass, paint brush, crayons, birthday candles, prize (I.e., Easter egg filled with m&m's)
Play Tray Game,(have all items on a tray, let children see them for about a minute then call up children and see if they can recall items - as a child picks an item give the following explanation).
Fish: born July 7, 1887 in Vitebsk, Russia. His father worked in a herring packing plant (what is that?). His mother sold herring, flour, sugar, and spices from a small shop in their home. He was the oldest of 9 children. He died in 1984 when he was 97 years old. (Show self portrait)

Diary: When he moved to Paris he began to paint memories of his childhood. Painted life in a Russian village, painted fables from the bible. Painted everything he was exposed to as a child. About painting, he said "it was more necessary for me then food." Could you paint your memories, write down things now so you can remember later
Fiddler On The Roof: (Play beginning segment) His uncle played the violin, once he saw him sitting on a rooftop chewing carrots, enjoying the view, later he put a violinist in many of his pictures. (Show Fiddler Painting) In the Jewish festivities in the community, the fiddler was there for all the events of life: birth, marriage and funerals. This was painted when he was 25 reminding him of the community where he was raised. Chagall considered this portrait very important. Chagall's painted memory of his uncle, the colors create a sense of music. In the lower left corner, Chagall painted himself with three heads, listening to the music.
Matzo Cracker: (put another cracker in a cover and hide in room before hand) Chagall was Jewish, explain the matzo's role in Passover and have child find in the room, they get a prize.
Paint Brush: Attended a Jewish elementary school, learned about drawing there, his family didn't have much money but they realized his talent and sent him to St. Petersburg for more art study.
Crayon: In Russia the artists used somber colors. When he went to Paris he began to paint in bright, cheerful colors. (Show "Magician). He said, "Color is everything".
Birthday candles: The Birthday shows how he felt on one of his birthdays, he floats home to Bella (his wife), she greets him with flowers and a kiss. He said, "I'm so happy I'm floating on air". Was a joyous man, happy with a lively imagination.
Tape measure: The actual picture of "I and the Village" is 751/4" x 59-1/4" - show the children how big this is
Explain the fun and beauty of "I and the Village", the eye is centered, lower left corner has a sun and moon combined. Everyone is happy, the cow has beads on, topsy turvy style.
Snack: Matzo cracker and cream cheese, or regular cheese.
