Broadway Boogie Woogie
1st Grade Lesson Plan
Preparation: Each child has a yellow, red, blue, black, & grey crayon out on the desk.
1. Introduce the artist by having a child come and stand at the front for each piece of information.
* Holland (pic of a windmill)
* Age 14 (someone who has a 14 year old in the family)
* music lover/ music
* nature/landscapes (hold pic)
* sand dune 20 years (child who goes to the Dunes)
* writer (child who likes to write)
* cubes (bring cubes w/them)
* NY (child who has been to NY) put up NY map and talk about painting
* pure colors (child bring up crayons)
2. Show 3 shirts (wide broad stripes, polo shirt stripes, small check/plaid stripes): talk about energy/ or busy road. Explain that wide stripes = slow driving not busy, smaller closer together = very busy
3. Passed out worksheet with 5 pieces of licorice, 2 starbursts and they could make their own work "busy" or "slow". When they are done move away from desk, then we had an "art walk" through the classroom. Have children color where the candy was, then they can eat the candy.
4. Show photo of artist, show cubist self portrait, show self portrait in abstract.
