(Packet has laminated colored work strips that can be posted in a "Mondrian" style; Y is on yellow paper, R on Red, B on Blue.)
Piet: Mondrian was born in Holland in 1872 (put up #6 and #7) He began art lessons when he was 14.
Music: He liked listening to music when he painted (Put up #1 and #2) Five years later he went to the big city of Amsterdam which is in Holland to study.
Landscapes: He liked painting things of nature and landscapes, show pics on page 61-67. (Put up #10 and #15) He painted the sea, sand dunes, trees, flowers and realistic paintings for about 20 years.
Writer: He was also a writer (Put up #5 and #14. He continued to write all his life. With a friend started a magazine call De Stijl (Style), wrote for it regularly.
Cube: When he was 39 he went to Paris, France. He saw there a new type of art named cubism (Put up #11 and #16)
Mondrian saw it this way; on the outside nature was confusing, packed with details, just as a tree is packed with twigs. but if you strip away the twigs and get rid of the details, an dig down to the core, you are left with pure shapes and pure colors which reflect the absolute harmony of the universe. Can do the following exercise on the board: Draw a tree (traditional style), then draw a abstract tree, then draw a very abstract tree, then draw a cubism tree. See example below:
Color and Lines: He reduced his range of colors to red, yellow, blue (Primary colors), plus black, white and grey. (Put up #8 and #12) and he used only vertical and horizontal lines. (Put up #7 and #3)
New York: He fled to New York during WWII (put up #4 and #13) he was successful and sold many paintings. He loved New York so much. Show a map of New York City (see if kids can see the comparisons to the art work).
Shut your eyes and think of some of your favorite things in nature. Think of the basic shape of it. It doesn't have to be square like Boogie Woogie. Remember how he used vertical and horizontal lines and remember he only used red, yellow, blue, black, white, gray and black lines. Use your graph paper and make your own favorite picture in "Mondrian" style.
